Attitudes Towards Democracy in Mogadishu

HIPS Facebook ImageThe vast majority of Mogadishu residents consider democratic elections in the city important, and intend to vote, according to the findings of a poll of 1633 people across the 17 districts of Benadir Region. But continuing insecurity is seen as the greatest obstacle to democratic elections. On the other hand, Mogadishu residents are also deeply unsatisfied with the 4.5 clan power-sharing system, and want a greater role for women and minorities.

DAREENKA DADKA MUQDISHO EE DIMOQRAADIYADDA

Inta badan dadka Muqdisho waxay rumeysan yihiin inay muhiim tahay inay doorashooyin dimoqraadi ah ka dhacaan caasimadda, waxayna u diyaarsan yihiin inay codkooda dhiibtaan, sidaas waxaa muujisay xog-uruurin ay ka qayb galeen 1633 qof oo kala deggan 17-ka degmo ee gobolka Banaadir. Balse amni xumada ayaa loo arkay inay tahay caqabadda ugu weyn ee ku hor gudban doorashooyin dimoqraadi ah. Dhanka kale, dadka Muqdisho ayaa si weyn uga biyo diidsan hannaanka 4.5 ee awoowd-qaybsiga beelaha, waxayna doonayaan in kaalin mug leh la siiyo dumarka iyo beelaha laga badan yahay.

I stongly agree with the findings, but the key questions are, what is our role in this increasingly complex 4.5 clan power sharing system? and what can we do to nature and preserve our national security and world peace?. In fact, one thing is certain, and indeed we must make sure our people, academicians and the so called politicians have access to the best available information about the issue surrounding peace, justice, freedom and security. In my opinion our country’s future deepends upon our interest in understanding of these complicated topics and that will be the time we can overcome the 4.5 system. Finally, we need civic education.

Amni Xumaddu wax caqabad weyn kuma ah doorashooyin ka dhaca Caasimadda, ee waxaa ka dhib badan hanaankii doorasho u baahnayd in loo diyaarsho dalka oo ay ugu horayso Diwaan galinta Muwaadiniinta. Wacyi galinta jiil aan intii ay ifka joogaaan arkin doorasho in ay maqlaan mooyaa. marka waxaaa taala howl naan ka dhib yarayn aminga in ay ka adagtahay muuyee. Doorashooyin waxaa laga hirgalshay meelo ka amni daran mogadishu sida Kabul & Baqdaad.

A system of government that rests on a fundamentally flawed power sharing formula is highly unlikely to produce genuine democratic outcome. The birth of democracy in Somalia requires social, political an economic condition conducive to democratic change, thus the absence of these preconditions make any attempt to bring democratic process a futile endeavor. Somali scholar, politicians, and policymakers should focus on reforming the existing system in order to create stable, secure and prosperous system receptive to democratic changes. Wide spread unemployment, staggering inflation rates, political-infighting, and insecurity are conditions that inhibit the possibilities of democratic governance. That said, it’s my hope that the new crowned administration will act immediately to improve the social, economic and the security situation of Somalia. The new Administration should prioritize security and economic development in order to attract Somali diaspora and foreign investment. Time is ticking and Somali people are tired of empty promises. It’s time to act, and act fast.
